How To Build Dog Kennels Instructions
Simple instructions on how to build dog kennels can help the owner design and construct a simple dog kennel. Building a dog kennel can be better than using a commercially designed dog kennel since the dog owner can make the homemade dog kennel meet the specific needs of the dog owner and dog.
Some well-meaning dog owners have been suspected of animal neglect or cruelty by having improper housing for their dogs. In one case in Pennsylvania, an overwhelmed dog owner stacked crates for her numerous dogs which let to horribly unsanitary conditions.
Local laws may impose restrictions on outdoor dog kennels. Before designing and building a dog kennel, the dog owner should check with the local authorities to find out what, if any, restrictions must be adhered to.
Common instructions for how to build a dog kennel begin with planning the dimensions and materials for the dog kennel. The sizes of the dog, doghouse, and desired opening to the kennel should be considered when planning the dimensions.
For materials for the walls of the kennel, many dog owners use chain link fencing materials. Other fencing materials may be used.
The posts for the fencing material should be well secured. This can be done by sinking the posts into concrete.
The flooring material should be easy to keep clean and easy to sanitize. Steel, wood, and concrete are often used, but some dog owners prefer the ground if the dog is not likely to dig under the walls of the kennel.
If concrete or wood is used, the floor can be built on a slight slope. This allows the dog owner to spray off the floor with a house as a quicker cleaning.
Dog kennels should never be completely in direct sunlight. If there are no natural sources of shade, the dog owner may want to build a roof over part of the dog kennel.
The door to the kennel should be properly secured. A metal latch should be used as opposed to tying the door shut with rope. Rope tends to be able to be stretched after being used for awhile, which could allow the dog to push the door open far enough to escape.
