Gay Hot Spots to Travel in Mexico

When you think about Mexican culture, what do you think of? More than likely, you think of a culture of machismo and the traditional values of the Catholic Church. While all of this is also true, Mexico is a modern society and as in the US and other Western countries, homosexuality is accepted in Mexican society.

Civil unions between gays have been legalized in the northern border state of Coahuila and Mexico City. The states of Veracruz and Michoacan are on the verge of passing the same measures just like Jalisco, Colima, Puebla and Guerrero.

Despite the impression people have of Mexico as a conservative and religious nation, in some regards it leads its neighbors. However, many Mexican gays and lesbians are not out about their sexuality. Even though homosexuality is largely accepted in Mexico, a lot of gays and lesbians in Mexico would rather not proclaim their sexual preferences to the world.

In general, Mexicans are more private about their personal lives than are Americans. Mexico is a country which gladly welcomes vacationers gay and straight alike. Mexico is such a gay friendly country that Planetout named it the top destination for gay travel in 2007.

So, let’s take a look at the Mexico’s top gay destinations.

Cancun’s oldest and most popular gay club is the Karamba. For more than 30 years, this club has been packing its dance floor with a lively throng which includes many international tourists as well as locals. The Picante is also worth a visit. A little smaller than the Karamba, this club draws a mixed crowd of gays and straights, tourists and locals, transvestites and really, everyone.

Villas Tacul is Cancun’s gay-oriented beach, but the Playa Delfines is more popular, being the city’s largest beach. Most of Cancun’s more than 100 hotels are gay friendly, so there’s always a great place to stay.

Mexico City. As Mexico’s largest city (and in fact, Mexico City is even larger than New York City), Mexico City has a large gay and lesbian community and has even legalized same sex civil unions. Mexico City offers a lot of gay nightlife and culture, with many gay clubs, including a few dozen in the Zona Rosa alone. There are gay theater groups and an annual Gay Pride Parade.

Guadalajara. The second largest Mexican city also has a large homosexual population, including a large lesbian community. The city has a gay cultural center and a widely popular gay radio show. Guadalajara has really large population of lesbians. For entertainment there are gay bars, and about two dozen gay clubs located mostly in the Zona Rosa. And then there is the Annual Gay Pride Parade.

This city also has many gay clubs and bars, but the Angel’s Bar is popular with tourists and features mostly electronic music. Monica’s Disco is another popular club which plays Latin dance music. Gay Travel Guide Recommendations: The Beaches of Cancun

Those of you who are going to holiday in Mexico will be pleasantly surprised at the beautiful beaches around Cancun’s hotel zone. A storm carried a lot of the sand away but it is now thankfully restored thanks to over 200 hundred people helping to restore these fantastic beaches.

The accommodations of the various resorts are inviting and luxurious just as the beaches are.

After the restoration of the beaches they appear to be about 50% bigger that what they were before the storms damaged them. The visitors that come to these beaches are able to enjoy the additional space when they take part in all of the activities that are offered.

Those beaches that extend into the Caribbean are often referred to as the north side beaches; these beaches are sheltered from the strong Caribbean current by Isla Mujeres. Those who visit this beach will find that in this area the wind and wave conditions are very mild ideal for family activities and swimming.

Those who enjoy water sport activities may prefer the beach on the east side. The following will give you some examples of the different beaches.

On the east side, starting at the Hotel Zone where the land extends in to the Caribbean is where Playa Las Perlas is located. This beach is popular for both water sports and swimming and has plenty of restaurants and bars close by.

Another beach on the north side that features crystal clear and calm waters is Playa Linda. This beach is home to many tourists destinations including scuba diving tours for the scuba enthusiast.

The neighboring beaches, Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas are known for the relaxing atmosphere and pristine sand on the beaches. These two beaches are ideal for people that enjoy the active water sports such as water skiing, boating or jet skiing since the waves are much more active than other areas.

Playa Marlin, Gaviota Azul and Chac Mool are probably the most northern on the east side of the hotel zone, though the beaches may not seem as glamorous as other beaches. Due to the high wave action, these beaches are popular for people who enjoy para-sailing, and windsurfing.

Play Ballenas can be found in one of the most exciting areas in Cancun and offers plenty of land exploration possibilities. Visitors enjoy the popular water sports like tubing, boating, swimming and water skiing. Playa Ballenas is a very friendly and fun beach.
